The Rome Viterbo Airport was opened in 1936 as part of Viterbo Air Force Base, located 3 km from the town. On 26 November 2007, Italian transport minister Alessandro Bianchi announced that Viterbo had been chosen as the site of the next airport in Lazio to serve Rome, over Latina, Frosinone, and Guidonia.
