Station's Recognised Signature Tunes

In common with the 15 other stations in the ITV network Ulster Television had its own especially composed signature tunes that were played at the start of the programme schedule each day.

A piece of music titled Seamus by the American musician, composer and bandleader Van Phillips (1905-1992), who had earlier written the theme tune of the popular 1950s BBC radio science fiction drama Journey Into Space, that was used from 1959-1971.

UTV's most recognised signature tune, however, was the delightfully brilliant The Antrim Road, a classical symphony composed by the English musician Wayne Hill that was used from 1971-1983. Hill’s most-famous tune featured on the legendary Vision On, Take Hart childrens art show on BBC television. In time The Antrim Road became just as recognisable as the Ulster Television logo and presenters, consequently becoming an integral element of the station’s brand. The catchy piece of music is still fondly remembered today. The composition has not been formally employed since the advent of breakfast television on ITV in February 1983, although the tune was reworked in 2007 as the theme tune for the local comedy archive show UTV Rewind presented by Julian Simmons.

Famous quotes containing the words station, recognised, signature and/or tunes:

Say first, of God above, or Man below,
What can we reason, but from what we know?
Of Man what see we, but his station here,
From which to reason, or to which refer?
Thro’ worlds unnumber’d tho’ the God be known,
‘Tis ours to trace him only in our own.

    Alexander Pope (1688–1744)

The priesthood is a marriage. People often start by falling in love, and they go on for years without realizing that that love must change into some other love which is so unlike it that it can hardly be recognised as love at all.
    Iris Murdoch (b. 1919)

The childless experts on child raising also bring tears of laughter to my eyes when they say, “I love children because they’re so honest.” There is not an agent in the CIA or the KGB who knows how to conceal the theft of food, how to fake being asleep, or how to forge a parent’s signature like a child.
    Bill Cosby (20th century)

Hark, hark, with what a pretty throat
    Poor robin-redbreast tunes his note;
Hark, how the jolly cuckoos sing
    Cuckoo—to welcome in the spring!
    Cuckoo—to welcome in the spring!
    John Lyly (1553–1606)
