History

On July 14, 1971, the official opening took place for a nine and a half mile section of U.S. 601 between Midland, North Carolina and NC 49. Over a period of 18 months (during which traffic detoured through Charlotte, the road was relocated and straightened, with slightly wider lanes, at a cost of $2 million.
