United Nations Billion Tree Campaign

United Nations Billion Tree Campaign

The Billion Tree Campaign, spearheaded by UNEP, was unveiled in 2006 as one response to the threat but also the opportunities of global warming, as well as to the wider sustainability challenges from water supply to biodiversity loss.

The campaign, which was placed under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, had an initial target of registering, through its dedicated website, one billion trees in 2007.

In 2008, the campaign's objective was raised to seven billion trees – a target to be met by the climate change conference that was held in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2009. By September 2009, the seven billion planted trees mark had been surpassed.

Famous quotes containing the words united, nations, billion, tree and/or campaign:

Before abstraction everything is one, but one like chaos; after abstraction everything is united again, but this union is a free binding of autonomous, self-determined beings. Out of a mob a society has developed, chaos has been transformed into a manifold world.
    Novalis [Friedrich Von Hardenberg] (1772–1801)

Two nations between whom there is no intercourse and no sympathy; who are as ignorant of each other’s habits, thoughts, and feelings, as if they were dwellers in different zones, or inhabitants of different planets.... The rich and the poor.
    Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881)

    SING a song of ‘sistence
    Pocket full of Eye
    Two billion Turtle-doves
    Mourning in a sty
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

A single soldier does not make a general, just as a single tree does not make a forest.
    Chinese proverb.

The war on privilege will never end. Its next great campaign will be against the privileges of the underprivileged.
