Notes
- Ge (ґ) was officially banned in the Soviet Ukraine from 1933 to 1990; missing from some computer character encodings and fonts.
- Soft sign (ь):
- The soft sign is not considered a letter, but an orthographic symbol, indicating the softening (palatalization) of the preceding consonant letter.
- The soft sign was at the end of the alphabet before 1990, when the new official orthography changed its position.
- The apostrophe indicates that the consonant preceding a soft vowel is not palatalized, when it otherwise would be.
- There are also digraphs (дж) and (дз) that are pronounced as a single sound such as dg in knowledge for дж and dz. Examples: джмiль (a bumble bee), бджoлa (a bee), дзвоник (a bell).

Famous quotes containing the words letter and/or names:
“Your letter is come; it came indeed twelve lines ago, but I
could not stop to acknowledge it before, & I am glad it did not
arrive till I had completed my first sentence, because the
sentence had been made since yesterday, & I think forms a very
good beginning.”
—Jane Austen (17751817)
“And even my sense of identity was wrapped in a namelessness often hard to penetrate, as we have just seen I think. And so on for all the other things which made merry with my senses. Yes, even then, when already all was fading, waves and particles, there could be no things but nameless things, no names but thingless names. I say that now, but after all what do I know now about then, now when the icy words hail down upon me, the icy meanings, and the world dies too, foully named.”
—Samuel Beckett (19061989)
