UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship

UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship

The UEFA U-17 Championship is an annual football competition organised by the sport's European governing body, UEFA. The competition has been held since 1982. From 1982 to 2001 it was an Under-16 event.

Currently it consists of two stages, similarly to UEFA's other European championship competitions. The final tournament is preceded by two qualification stages: a qualifying round and an Elite round. During these rounds, 52 national teams will compete to determine the seven teams beside the host team which play the final stage.

This meeting serves as a preliminary competition for the FIFA U-17 World Cup every other year.

Famous quotes containing the words european and/or football:

I should think the American admiration of five-minute tourists has done more to kill the sacredness of old European beauty and aspiration than multitudes of bombs would have done.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

In football they measure forty-yard sprints. Nobody runs forty yards in basketball. Maybe you run the ninety-four feet of the court; then you stop, not on a dime, but on Miss Liberty’s torch. In football you run over somebody’s face.
    Donald Hall (b. 1928)
