Famous quotes containing the words twin, cities, gay, men and/or chorus:
“We live under continual threat of two equally fearful, but seemingly opposed, destinies: unremitting banality and inconceivable terror. It is fantasy, served out in large rations by the popular arts, which allows most people to cope with these twin specters.”
—Susan Sontag (b. 1933)
“... in the cities there are thousands of rolling stones like me. We are all alike; we have no ties, we know nobody, we own nothing. When one of us dies, they scarcely know where to bury him.... We have no house, no place, no people of our own. We live in the streets, in the parks, in the theatres. We sit in restaurants and concert halls and look about at the hundreds of our own kind and shudder.”
—Willa Cather (18731947)
“A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise shall give him no peace.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Elves are no smaller
than men, and walk
as men do, in this world....”
—Denise Levertov (b. 1923)
“Geoff Carter: Chorus girl?
Bonnie Lee: No, I do a specialty.
Geoff: So much the better.”
—Jules Furthman (18881960)
