Tumkur is located at 13°20′N 77°06′E / 13.34°N 77.1°E / 13.34; 77.1. It has an average elevation of 822 metres (2696 feet). The city has a station on the South Western railway, 43 m. N.W. from Bangalore. This city, which is just 70 km from Bangalore, appears to be an increasingly viable alternative for Bangaloreans looking to purchase sites.

Commissioner of the Tumkur Urban Development Authority (TUDA) Adarshakumar told The Hindu that 40 percent of sites in Tumkur are bought by Bangaloreans.

He said that due to this, site rates had almost doubled in the past three years and the demand had also gone up.

He added that many people working in the information technology and biotechnology sectors in Bangalore were participating in the auction of corner sites.
