Tropical Storm Maria

Maria has been used to name two tropical cyclones in the Atlantic:

  • 2005's Hurricane Maria - a Category three storm that never approached land in its tropical stage.
  • 2011's Hurricane Maria - formed in the eastern Atlantic; achieved the record for being the second earliest 13th Atlantic storm, with only 2005 Maria's forming seven days earlier.

Maria has also been used to name three tropical cyclones in the western Pacific Ocean.

  • 2000's Tropical Storm Maria (T0013, 21W) - a severe tropical storm that made a landfall in southern China
  • 2006's Typhoon Maria (T0607, 09W) - tracked just south and east of Japan.
  • 2012's Severe Tropical Storm Maria (T1222, 23W)

Famous quotes containing the words tropical, storm and/or maria:

Then the bowsprit got mixed with the rudder sometimes:
A thing, as the Bellman remarked,
That frequently happens in tropical climes
When a vessel is, so to speak, “snarked.”
Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832–1898)

As the bird trims her to the gale,
I trim myself to the storm of time,
I man the rudder, reef the sail,
Obey the voice at eve obeyed in prime:
    “Lowly faithful, banish fear,
    Right onward drive unharmed;
The port, well worth the cruise, is near,
    And every wave is charmed.”
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

It were a blessed sight to see
That child become a willow tree,
    His brother trees among.
He’d be four times as tall as me,
And live three times as long.
    —Catherine Maria Fanshawe (1765–1834)
