On the 23rd November 2012, the Richmond Football Club announced Cotchin's appointment as the Captain for the 2013 season. With this appointment he became the 40th captain in Richmond’s AFL/VFL history. Cotchin chose not to carry on the now traditional captains guernsey No.17 with Wayne Campbell, Kane Johnson and Chris Newman all adopting the number. This was to honour richmond legend Jack Dyer (who wore the number 17) after his death in 2003
