Tranz Scenic - Rolling Stock

Rolling Stock

The Capital Connection: refurbished 1970s Mark 2 carriages.

The TranzAlpine: 56-foot carriages, most dating from the 1940s. They were extensively refurbished in the late 1980s, receiving new bogies and panoramic windows. The capital expenditure required for their replacement is seen as a major impediment to the future of the operation.

The Coastal Pacific and Northern Explorer: AK Class carriages.

In March 2009 the New Zealand government confirmed funding of NZ$39.9 million for a new fleet of 17 AK tourist carriages to be used on the TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific. The class are the first new passenger carriages to be entirely designed and built in New Zealand for many years and is under construction at KiwiRail's Hillside Workshops in Dunedin, with three cars entering service on the Coastal Pacific on 2 November 2011.
