Townsville Correctional Centre

Townsville Correctional Centre is an Australian prison facility in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. The facility is more commonly known as "Stuart Prison", "Stewart's Creek Penal Establishment", "H.M. Prison Townsville", and now known as "Townsville Correctional Complex."

It was the only correctional centre in Queensland to hold mainstream males, females and protection prisoners within the same secure perimeter.

A new female facility has been constructed in the precincts outside the male section within its very own secure perimeter.

Townsville Correctional Complex also includes a Farm Complex located about 2.4 km south-east of the Prison, near to the Woongarra Crematorium.


Inaugural Superintendent - Mr. James Ryan was appointed in 1893 from his former position as Superintendent of the "old" Townsville Gaol, which was located at the site of the current Townsville Central State School on Warburton street in North Ward.

Stewart's Creek Penal Establishment, this year (2013) celebrates 120 years of service to the Queensland Community. It is the longest continually operating Prison in the State of Queensland.
