Tourism in Alberta - Overview

Overview

Edmonton (Alberta's capital city), Calgary, and the Canadian Rockies (Banff National Park and Jasper National Park) are the most popular destinations for visitors. West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton is the most visited attraction in the province. A million visitors each year attend Calgary's Stampede, a celebration of Canada's own Wild West and the cattle ranching industry. Edmonton, known as Canada's Festival City, boasts a summer calendar of non-stop festivals, included the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival and the Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

Edmonton attracts over 4.4 million tourists annually, Calgary 4.2 million and the Rocky Mountain Parks nearly 3 million. Only an hour's drive from the Rocky Mountains, Calgary also makes a visit to Banff National Park something which can easily be done in a day. Jasper National Park is easily reached from Edmonton via the TransCanada Yellowhead Highway or on Via Rail Canada.
