Topographic Isolation

The topographic isolation of a summit is the great circle distance to the nearest point of equal elevation. Topographic isolation represents a radius of dominance in which the summit is the highest point. Topographic isolation can be calculated for small hills and islands as well as for major mountain peaks. Topographic isolation can even be calculated for submarine summits.

Famous quotes containing the word isolation:

Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon. Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer. Only connect, and the beast and the monk, robbed of the isolation that is life to either, will die.
    —E.M. (Edward Morgan)
