Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum

The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum (東京都庭園美術館, Tōkyō-to Teien Bijutsukan?) is an art museum in Tokyo, Japan. It is one of Japan's many museums which are supported by a prefectural government.

The museum is located in Minato ward, just east of Meguro Station. The museum is housed in an Art Deco building that was previously the residence of Prince Asaka Yasuhiko (1933–47), the official residence of Prime Minister (1947–50), and the State Guest House (1950–74).

Teien means Japanese garden and the museum is named so because the building is surrounded by a garden and sculptures.

Famous quotes containing the words tokyo, metropolitan, art and/or museum:

Eclecticism is the degree zero of contemporary general culture: one listens to reggae, watches a western, eats McDonald’s food for lunch and local cuisine for dinner, wears Paris perfume in Tokyo and “retro” clothes in Hong Kong; knowledge is a matter for TV games. It is easy to find a public for eclectic works.
    Jean François Lyotard (b. 1924)

In metropolitan cases, the love of the most single-eyed lover, almost invariably, is nothing more than the ultimate settling of innumerable wandering glances upon some one specific object.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.
    Ingmar Bergman (b. 1918)

    Always clung to by barnacles.
Hawaiian saying no. 2661, ‘lelo No’Eau, collected, translated, and annotated by Mary Kawena Pukui, Bishop Museum Press, Hawaii (1983)
