Tohunga Suppression Act 1907

The Tohunga Suppression Act 1907 was an Act of the Parliament of New Zealand aimed to replace tohunga as traditional Māori healers with "modern" medicine.

It was introduced by James Carroll, with Māori prophet, faith healer and land rights activist Rua Kenana a specific target, but was never used against him and was repealed in 1962.

Famous quotes containing the words suppression and/or act:

A state that denies its citizens their basic rights becomes a danger to its neighbors as well: internal arbitrary rule will be reflected in arbitrary external relations. The suppression of public opinion, the abolition of public competition for power and its public exercise opens the way for the state power to arm itself in any way it sees fit.... A state that does not hesitate to lie to its own people will not hesitate to lie to other states.
    Václav Havel (b. 1936)

Remember how often you have postponed minding your interest, and let slip those opportunities the gods have given you. It is now high time to consider what sort of world you are part of, and from what kind of governor of it you are descended; that you have a set period assigned you to act in, and unless you improve it to brighten and compose your thoughts, it will quickly run off with you, and be lost beyond recovery.
    Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121–180)
