Tipping Point Community

Tipping Point Community is a grant-making organization that fights poverty in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded by Daniel Lurie in 2005, Tipping Point finds the most effective non-profit addressing poverty in the community, funds them, and provides the management assistance necessary to ensure that they succeed. Tipping Point provides this management assistance through the strategic partnerships it builds with private sector corporations and non-profit organizations.

Tipping Point is modeled after the Robin Hood Foundation in New York, and has been praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for giving "young donors a place to make their first foray into the charity world by taking on issues of poverty and class." According to the San Francisco Business Times, "Tipping Point has quadrupled the number of donor gifts and increased the amount it gives away from $450,000 two years ago to $5.5 million this year." Its board is composed of local philanthropists including Katie Schwab, Chris James and former San Francisco 49er Ronnie Lott. Tipping Point’s board underwrites all fundraising and operating costs, enabling 100% of every dollar donated to go directly toward grant-making.

By June 2009, Tipping Point will have granted more than $9 million in funds to Bay Area organizations serving low-income families and individuals in four key areas:

  • Education/Youth Development
  • Employment/Asset Building
  • Child/Family Wellness
  • Homelessness/Housing Assistance

Famous quotes containing the words tipping, point and/or community:

In what camera do you taste
    Poison, in what darkness set
    Glittering scales and point
    The tipping tongue?
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

The end of all stories, even if the writer forebears to mention it, is death, which is where time stops short. Sheherezade knew this, which is why she kept on spinning another story out of the bowels of the last one, never coming to a point where she could say: “This is the end.” Because it would have been.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

When you have come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, “I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,” you may indeed set over you a king whom the LORD your God will choose. One of your own community you may set as king over you; you are not permitted to put a foreigner over you, who is not of your own community.
    Bible: Hebrew, Deuteronomy 17:14,15.
