1979

  • 27 August - 3 UDR's Newry Company deploy to Narrow Water near Warrenpoint to assist in the aftermath of an explosion which killed six members of the Parachute Regiment. In a secondary explosion, the company commander and his signaller are killed.
  • 28 September - border battalions deploy to prevent action by loyalists during the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Republic of Ireland.
