- Sublime singer/guitarist Bradley Nowell dies from a heroin overdose at the age of 28, shortly before the release of their highly acclaimed self-titled album. Following his death, Sublime breaks up.
- Bass player Jason Thirsk formerly of Pennywise dies of self-inflicted gunshot wounds at the age of 28 on July 29. However, the group did not break up and bass player Randy Bradbury continued for him.
- The Descendents reform for a new album and tour.
