History

Thurrock was traditionally a safe Labour seat, although the Conservatives gained it in 1987 with a slim majority and held it for one Parliament before it was regained by Labour. However, in the 2010 general election the Conservatives gained the seat, with Jackie Doyle-Price being elected as the MP with a majority of less than 100 votes.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

America is, therefore the land of the future, where, in the ages that lie before us, the burden of the World’s history shall reveal itself. It is a land of desire for all those who are weary of the historical lumber-room of Old Europe.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

The history of his present majesty, is a history of unremitting injuries and usurpations ... all of which have in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world, for the truth of which we pledge a faith yet unsullied by falsehood.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
