Through-composed - Compositional Technique

Compositional Technique

Furthermore, the term through-composed applies to a compositional technique. When a work is composed chronologically (i.e. from the beginning of the piece to the end, in order) without a precompositional formal plan, it is also called through-composed. In many cases, a composer comes up with a chorus or a theme first and writes the preceding verse, introduction and exposition to match. In a through-composed piece, the composer just starts writing at the introduction and keeps writing without going back until the last bar has been written.
