Thornton Academy - High School Program

High School Program

The school's scheduling system for grades 9–12 is one called block scheduling and is used throughout most of southern Maine's high schools. Rather than students taking all of their classes in a single day, classes are divided along a two-day cycle with four class 'blocks' in each day. This causes each class to meet for 80 minutes every two school days instead of 40 minutes every school day. The intent of this system is to allow teachers and students to be more thorough in each class meeting, with a smaller amount of time devoted every day to the transition between classes. The two alternating days are named "Maroon Days" and "Gold Days" after the school's official colors.

Famous quotes containing the words high, school and/or program:

All women, from the countess to the cook-maid, are put into high good humor with themselves when a man is taken with them at first sight. And be they ever so plain, they will find twenty good reasons to defend the judgment of such a man.
    Samuel Richardson (1689–1761)

He had first discovered a propensity for savagery in the acrid lavatories of a minor English public school where he used to press the heads of the new boys into the ceramic bowl and pull the flush upon them to drown their gurgling protests.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

O Jesse had a wife, a mourner all her life
And the children they were brave,
But the dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard
He laid Jesse James in his grave.
—Administration in the State of Miss, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
