Thomas Savage (bishop)

Thomas Savage (1463–1507) was an English clergyman.

Savage was one of the many children of Sir John Savage, K.B., of Clifton, Cheshire, by his wife Katherine, daughter of Thomas Stanley, 1st Baron Stanley, K.G.

On 3 December 1492, Savage was nominated Bishop of Rochester. He was consecrated on 28 April 1493. He held the post he until 1497 when he was translated to be Bishop of London.

Savage's last post was as Archbishop of York from 1501 to 1507. He was translated from the see of London on 18 January 1501. While Archbishop he handled the marriage ceremony of Arthur, Prince of Wales to Catherine of Aragon. Arthur died young, and his brother Henry, who became Henry VIII, then married Catherine.

Savage died in September 1507, either on the 2nd or the 3rd. Thomas Savage is buried in York Minster where his effigy remains.

Famous quotes containing the word savage:

    You seem to me as Dian in her orb,
    As chaste as is the bud ere it be blown;
    But you are more intemperate in your blood
    Than Venus, or those pampered animals
    That rage in savage sensuality.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
