Loftus was present at the only known occasion of a ball bursting during a gaelic football match. On Sunday, November 19, 1960 in Knockcroghery in a Division 2 National Football League game between Dublin and Roscommon, the ball landed on a gate and burst. Play was interrupted for 13 minutes.
