Third Rail - Compromise Systems

Compromise Systems

Several systems use third rail for part of the system, and other systems such as overhead catenary or diesel power for the remainder. These may exist because of the connection of separately-owned railways using the different systems, local ordinances, or other historical reasons.

On the southern region of British Rail, freight yards were wired with overhead wiring to avoid the hazards of third rail. The locomotives were fitted with a pantograph as well as pick up shoes.

Famous quotes containing the words compromise and/or systems:

It’s true Heaven forbids some pleasures, but a compromise can usually be found.
    Molière [Jean Baptiste Poquelin] (1622–1673)

What is most original in a man’s nature is often that which is most desperate. Thus new systems are forced on the world by men who simply cannot bear the pain of living with what is. Creators care nothing for their systems except that they be unique. If Hitler had been born in Nazi Germany he wouldn’t have been content to enjoy the atmosphere.
    Leonard Cohen (b. 1934)
