Local Government
The local government consists of a thirteen-member Municipal Council, with responsibilities for governmental functions delegated to appointed committees. The mayor is chosen from among the elected or nominated councillors for one-year terms. However, with the new constitution, the mayor will be directly elected by the populace for a five-year term starting in 2012. The council sets the policies and bylaws while the day-to-day running is managed by the town clerk seconded from the local government ministry.
The town in 2008 signed a sister city agreement with Dixon, Illinois to create new economic, cultural and social opportunities.

“America is the worlds living myth. Theres no sense of wrong when you kill an American or blame America for some local disaster. This is our function, to be character types, to embody recurring themes that people can use to comfort themselves, justify themselves and so on. Were here to accommodate. Whatever people need, we provide. A myth is a useful thing.”
—Don Delillo (b. 1926)
“Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories.”
