The song was written by Christina Aguilera and Glen Ballard, with production by Ballard. It is a piano-ballad about trusting yourself and your instincts. "The Voice Within" was released as the fifth and final single from the album. "The Voice Within" received positive reviews from music critics, who compared Aguilera with artists, such as Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, while naming it "an inspirational ballad".

The song achieved moderate success across Europe and Australia, peaking inside the top ten of several countries. It was moderately successful in the US, peaking at number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's accompanying music video was directed by David LaChapelle. Critics acclaimed the music video that was filmed in black and white as a single continuous camera shot.
