The game received mixed to negative reviews on release. While the graphics, multiplayer and sound design were praised, many criticisms were laid against the repetitive gameplay, weak combat, poor voice acting and slow pacing. IGN reviewer Dan Adams gave it a rating of 6.5, saying "Without those big headed cartoon people, The Settlers series is just another RTS that manages to scrape by on technical graphics and decent sound. The gameplay, which I had believed would be changing fairly significantly, hasn't really changed a bit. Armies are organized a tad bit differently, but combat is still elementary school strategy for dummies. The pace of the game is still frustratingly slow (even if they did rid themselves of horrible pathfinding problems) and missions aren't anything close to exciting, even when they're supposed to be. This is simply a below average game that I can't really find much of a reason to recommend". Eurogamer gave it a middling score of 5/10, with its reviewer saying "It used to be a management game and now it's an RTS, and it's not very good".

Gamespot gave the game a rating of 6.4, while Gamespy gave it a meager two-stars. GameRankings gave it a rating of 61.35%, while Metacritic gave it a rating of 58 out of 100, based on 29 reviews. Review website 1UP.com gave it one of the lowest scores, with a bottom-level rating of D-.

Famous quotes containing the word reception:

To the United States the Third World often takes the form of a black woman who has been made pregnant in a moment of passion and who shows up one day in the reception room on the forty-ninth floor threatening to make a scene. The lawyers pay the woman off; sometimes uniformed guards accompany her to the elevators.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)

Satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody’s face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind of reception it meets in the world, and that so very few are offended with it.
    Jonathan Swift (1667–1745)

Aesthetic emotion puts man in a state favorable to the reception of erotic emotion.... Art is the accomplice of love. Take love away and there is no longer art.
    Rémy De Gourmont (1858–1915)
