Colonial Tavern
In 1800, the '76 House began to operate exclusively as a tavern, and began to offer accommodation. Over the past two hundred years, the '76 House has accommodated every General of the west wing of the Continental Army, including Commander-in-Chief General George Washington.
The '76 House is one of America's oldest taverns, and is the only colonial tavern to have continually provided services in the same unaltered structure for the past 325 years. The building is located on 110 Main St, Tappan, New York. In 1987 Rob Norden purchased and restored the restaurant which is now owned and operated by his son.
The '76 House is a contributing property to the Tappan Historic District.

Famous quotes containing the words colonial and/or tavern:
“Are you there, Africa with the bulging chest and oblong thigh? Sulking Africa, wrought of iron, in the fire, Africa of the millions of royal slaves, deported Africa, drifting continent, are you there? Slowly you vanish, you withdraw into the past, into the tales of castaways, colonial museums, the works of scholars.”
—Jean Genet (19101986)
“The tavern will compare favorably with the church. The church is the place where prayers and sermons are delivered, but the tavern is where they are to take effect, and if the former are good, the latter cannot be bad.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
