The Bridge (novel) - Literary Significance & Criticism

Literary Significance & Criticism

The author has said that of the novels he has written, this is his personal favourite. "Definitely the intellectual of the family, it's the one that went away to University and got a first. I think The Bridge is the best of my books."

Kafkaesque and multi-layered, it is probably the non-SF Banks novel with most in common with his Culture books. There is even mention of a knife missile late in the book. Banks has said that after this book, he felt his SF and non-SF work diverged.

Famous quotes containing the words literary, significance and/or criticism:

There are in me, in literary terms, two distinct characters: one who is taken with roaring, with lyricism, with soaring aloft, with all the sonorities of phrase and summits of thought; and the other who digs and scratches for truth all he can, who is as interested in the little facts as the big ones, who would like to make you feel materially the things he reproduces.
    Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880)

History is the interpretation of the significance that the past has for us.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)

...I wasn’t at all prepared for the avalanche of criticism that overwhelmed me. You would have thought I had murdered someone, and perhaps I had, but only to give her successor a chance to live. It was a very sad business indeed to be made to feel that my success depended solely, or at least in large part, on a head of hair.
    Mary Pickford (1893–1979)
