The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet

The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet (now known as The Tiptons Sax Quartet) is a jazz saxophone quartet from Seattle, Washington. They actually consist of five members (the fifth member being the quartet's drummer and percussionist). The name of the quartet was inspired by Billy Tipton, a jazz pianist and saxophonist, who upon his death was revealed to be anatomically female. Formed in 1988, they have toured frequently in North America and Europe, collaborated with Pat Graney Dance Company, taught workshops on improvisation and composition, and have recorded eight CDs.

Famous quotes containing the words billy and/or memorial:

“How old is she, Billy boy, Billy boy?
How old is she, charming Billy?”
    Past six, past seven,
    Past twenty and eleven,
She’s a young thing, and cannot leave her mother.”
    —Unknown. Billy Boy (l. 21–25)

When I received this [coronation] ring I solemnly bound myself in marriage to the realm; and it will be quite sufficient for the memorial of my name and for my glory, if, when I die, an inscription be engraved on a marble tomb, saying, “Here lieth Elizabeth, which reigned a virgin, and died a virgin.”
    Elizabeth I (1533–1603)
