Coordinates: 51°03′58″N 1°18′07″W / 51.066°N 1.302°W / 51.066; -1.302 The Textile Conservation Centre is a specialist centre for research and training at the University of Southampton. It was founded in 1975 by Karen Finch OBE and was based at Hampton Court Palace for nearly 25 years. In 1998 the Centre merged with the University of Southampton, one of the UK’s top research-led universities, and in 1999 it relocated to a purpose-designed building on the University's Winchester School of Art campus in the city of Winchester.

In April 2009 it was announced that the University of Southampton has decided to close the Textile Conservation Centre on 31 October 2009, prompting widespread concern by academics and historians.

Famous quotes containing the words textile, conservation and/or centre:

Stupid or smart, there wasn’t much choice about what was going to happen to me ... Growing up was like falling into a hole.... I might not quit school, not while Mama had any say in the matter, but what difference would that make? What was I going to do in five years? Work in the textile mill? Join Mama at the diner? It all looked bleak to me. No wonder people got crazy as they grew up.
    Dorothy Allison (b. 1953)

A country grows in history not only because of the heroism of its troops on the field of battle, it grows also when it turns to justice and to right for the conservation of its interests.
    Aristide Briand (1862–1932)

Go anywhere in England where there are natural, wholesome, contented, and really nice English people; and what do you always find? That the stables are the real centre of the household.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
