Linear tetrapyrroles (called bilanes) include:

  • Heme breakdown products (e.g., bilirubin)
  • Phycobilins (found in cyanobacteria)

Cyclic tetrapyrroles, using four one-carbon bridges, include:

  • Porphyrins, including heme, the core of hemoglobin
  • Chlorins, including those at the core of chlorophyll.
  • Corrins
