As of 2001 India census, Tenkasi had a population of 62,828. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. The average literacy rate is 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy i.e. population is under 6 years of age.
In Tenkasi, there are two bus stations, the Old and New Bus Stand, and two Railway Stations, Tenkasi Junction and Kezhapuliur Railways station.
