Culture

The Brewhouse Theatre is the largest theatre and arts centre in Taunton, offering drama, dance, comedy, music, workshops, exhibitions and poetry by both local and national touring artists such as actor Simon Callow and clarinetist Emma Johnson in Spring 2012. The Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre also operates as a theatre and is based at Heathfield Community School.

Taunton is home to many choirs and orchestras who mainly perform in the many churches in the town, or in the theatres and chapels of the various Taunton schools. Many of the local musical and drama groups are members of the Taunton Association of Performing Arts (TAPA) which produces a diary and anti-clash calendar of performances in and around the town.

Occasionally, larger-scale events are held at County Ground, Taunton, such as Elton John in 2006 who will return to the same venue in 2012.

Famous quotes containing the word culture:

... we’ve allowed a youth-centered culture to leave us so estranged from our future selves that, when asked about the years beyond fifty, sixty, or seventy—all part of the average human life span providing we can escape hunger, violence, and other epidemics—many people can see only a blank screen, or one on which they project fear of disease and democracy.
    Gloria Steinem (b. 1934)

Sanity consists in not being subdued by your means. Fancy prices are paid for position, and for the culture of talent, but to the grand interests, superficial success is of no account.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Cynicism makes things worse than they are in that it makes permanent the current condition, leaving us with no hope of transcending it. Idealism refuses to confront reality as it is but overlays it with sentimentality. What cynicism and idealism share in common is an acceptance of reality as it is but with a bad conscience.
Richard Stivers, U.S. sociologist, educator. The Culture of Cynicism: American Morality in Decline, ch. 1, Blackwell (1994)
