Tathagata Roy

Tathagata Roy is an Indian politician, engineer and author. He was president of West Bengal state unit of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2002 till 2006. Currently he is a member of the BJP National Executive, the party's central policy making body.

Tathagata Roy was born on 14 September 1945 at Kolkata. He had a distinguished academic career, having been a rank holder in the school leaving examination and a Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search Scholar. He studied Civil Engineering in Bengal Engineering College Sibpur, when it was affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Later he joined Indian Railways Service of Engineers. He worked as General Manager, RITES and as Chief Engineer -Design of Metro Railways, Calcutta.

He took voluntary retirement in 1990 and joined Jadavpur University as professor and founder head of the Department of Construction Engineering. He is a former Chairman Board of Governors of TTTI Calcutta (2000 to 2005). He is a fellow of the Institution of Engineers and life member of the Indian Council of Arbitration. He also holds a Law Degree of Calcutta University.

He was attracted towards Hindutva and became a Swayamsevak in 1986. After leaving government service he joined the BJP in 1990. He replaced Mr. Ashim Ghosh in the year 2002 and made over office to Mr. Sukumar Banerjee in 2006.

He is the author of two books entitled My People, Uprooted: A Saga of the Hindus of Eastern Bengal, later republished under the title "A Suppressed Chapter in History: The Exodus of Hindus from East Pakistan and Bangladesh, 1947-2006", Bookwell,Delhi, 2007; and "The Life and Times of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee", Prabhat Prakashan, Delhi, 2012. The latter has also been translated into Hindi under the title "Apratim Nayak: Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee" and published by the same publisher. He writes extensively, both in English and in his native Bengali. He takes great interest in the subject of the first book and has made it the mission of his life to bring this nearly-forgotten but massive Human Rights violation to the attention of the world.

Roy is the elder brother of All India Trinamool Congress(AITC) MP & Ex-MoS(Urban Development) Saugata Roy. Tathagata Roy was the MP Electoral candidate for the Lok Shabha election in 2009. He posed his candidature from the North Kolkata constituency of West Bengal. However, his lost the elections.
