Tate's Purchase of The Upper Room

Tate's Purchase Of The Upper Room

The Upper Room is an installation of 13 paintings of rhesus macaque monkeys by English artist Chris Ofili in a specially-designed room. It was bought by the Tate gallery in 2005 from the Victoria Miro Gallery and was the cause of a media furore after a campaign initiated by the Stuckist art group as Ofili was on the board of Tate trustees at the time of the purchase. In 2006 the Charity Commission censured the Tate for the purchase, but did not revoke it.

Famous quotes containing the words tate, purchase, upper and/or room:

    Men cannot live forever
    But they must die forever....
    —Allen Tate (1899–1979)

Riches are valuable at all times, and to all men; because they always purchase pleasures, such as men are accustomed to, and desire: Nor can any thing restrain or regulate the love of money, but a sense of honour and virtue; which, if it be not nearly equal at all times, will naturally abound most in ages of knowledge and refinement.
    David Hume (1711–1776)

Like many of the Upper Class He liked the Sound of Broken Glass.
    Hilaire Belloc (1870–1953)

And I think in this empty world there was room for me and a
    mountain lion.
And I think in the world beyond, how easily we might spare a million
    or two of humans
    And never miss them.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)
