Tarleton was a chapelry in the parish of Croston and subsequently a parish in the Leyland hundred. In 1837 it joined the Ormskirk Poor Law Union.

Tarleton is a civil parish in the South Ribble ward of West Lancashire Borough Council and has a parish council. It is currently within the Parliamentary Constituency of South Ribble.

The Parish of Tarleton is divided into three administrative wards, Central (which includes Sollom), Hesketh Lane and Mere Brow (which includes Holmeswood).
