Talmage Cooley - Background

Background

After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1988 with BA and MBA degrees, Cooley worked as a bond trader in the fixed income division of Morgan Stanley in New York. In the mid-1990s he left Wall Street and began directing television commercials, including some for prominent non-profits such as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Through this work, he became interested in large-scale social change efforts that successfully leveraged strategic marketing insights in service of shifting cultural norms, which led to his founding of The Gun Violence Project and then The Center to Prevent Youth Violence. In 2012, Cooley graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School with an MPA degree, and founded Democracy.com, a social platform providing a campaign profile "for every candidate from every party in every election".

Famous quotes containing the word background:

Silence is the universal refuge, the sequel to all dull discourses and all foolish acts, a balm to our every chagrin, as welcome after satiety as after disappointment; that background which the painter may not daub, be he master or bungler, and which, however awkward a figure we may have made in the foreground, remains ever our inviolable asylum, where no indignity can assail, no personality can disturb us.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Pilate with his question “What is truth?” is gladly trotted out these days as an advocate of Christ, so as to arouse the suspicion that everything known and knowable is an illusion and to erect the cross upon that gruesome background of the impossibility of knowledge.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

... every experience in life enriches one’s background and should teach valuable lessons.
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)
