Tafsir Al-Tabari - Preface

Preface

In the preface, Tabari has given general facts about the Quran, including its superiority to any other text, what tafsir and tawil are, the seven qiraat, companions who commented on the Quran and the naming of the suras.

There is great emphasis on the language of the Quran, Arabic, and the view that there are foreign words in the Quran are rejected. It is put forward that these foreign words are coherent with Arabic, entering the Arabic language before the revelation of the Quran, and that they are very rare, and cannot be used as counter evidence that the Quran is Arabic.

Famous quotes containing the word preface:

Rice and peas fit into that category of dishes where two ordinary foods, combined together, ignite a pleasure far beyond the capacity of either of its parts alone. Like rhubarb and strawberries, apple pie and cheese, roast pork and sage, the two tastes and textures meld together into the sort of subtle transcendental oneness that we once fantasized would be our experience when we finally found the ideal mate.

I suspect by the account you give me of your garden, that you mean a surprise. As good singers always preface their performance by complaints of cold, hoarseness &c.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
