Swan Lake (Martins)

This article is about Martins' 1996 full evening ballet. For George Balanchine's 1951 one act version, see Swan Lake (Balanchine). For the original, see Swan Lake. For other uses, see Swan Lake (disambiguation).

Swan Lake is a two-act ballet made by New York City Ballet (NYCB) balletmaster in chief Peter Martins after Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov, and George Balanchine (founding balletmaster – and co-founder – of City Ballet) to Tschaikovsky's eponymous music (1875–56). The premiere took place October 27, 1996, with the Royal Danish Ballet at the Royal Theatre, Copenhagen; the NYCB premiere was April 29, 1999, at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center. Peter Martins' wife, NYCB principal dancer Darci Kistler, chose to include the final act of Swan Lake in her farewell performance, Sunday, June 27th.

Famous quotes containing the words swan and/or lake:

And of the swan in death these dreamers tell
of its last flight and how it falls, a plummet,
    pierced by the freezing bullet
and how three feathers, loosened by the shot,
    descend like snow upon it.
    Patricia K. Page (b. 1916)

Lenin on a bench beside a lake disturbed
The swans. He was not the man for swans.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)
