Suriname National Football Team

The Suriname national football team is the national team of Suriname and is controlled by the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond.

Although the former Dutch colony is located in South America, it competes in CONCACAF, together with Guyana and French Guiana. Suriname won the CFU Championship (Digicel Caribbean Cup predecessor) in 1978, were runners-up in 1979 and reached fourth place in 1994 and 1996. Unlike in the Netherlands Antilles, another former Dutch colony, it is ruled that players who move abroad to play in the Netherlands are not eligible to play for Suriname. Many Suriname-born players and Dutch-born players of Surinamese descent, like Royston Drenthe, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Andwélé Slory, Ryan Babel, Aron Winter, Romeo Castelen, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink turned out to play for Oranje.

In 2008 Suriname entered the group stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying despite using only local players. With their two-leg victory over neighbours Guyana, Suriname faced Haiti, Costa Rica, and El Salvador in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification (CONCACAF) semi-finale round. Suriname has also qualified to the second round of the 2008 Caribbean Championship. The Surinaamse Voetbal Bond has signed an equipment sponsorship with the Dutch company COPA to last for four years.

Famous quotes containing the words national, football and/or team:

Disney World has acquired by now something of the air of a national shrine. American parents who don’t take their children there sense obscurely that they have failed in some fundamental way, like Muslims who never made it to Mecca.
    Simon Hoggart (b. 1946)

In this dream that dogs me I am part
Of a silent crowd walking under a wall,
Leaving a football match, perhaps, or a pit,
    All moving the same way.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)

Imagination is a valuable asset in business and she has a sister, Understanding, who also serves. Together they make a splendid team and business problems dissolve and the impossible is accomplished by their ministrations.... Imagination concerning the world’s wants and the individual’s needs should be the Alpha and Omega of self-education.
    Alice Foote MacDougall (1867–1945)
