Surakarta is the birthplace on Indonesian racing car driver Rio Haryanto who is currently racing in the GP2 series. On the 12nd of July 2012 he tested a Marussia F1 car at the Silverstone Circuit, Britain. He was the third fastest of 4 drivers, setting a best lap of 1m 37.404. He was 846 thousandths of a second of the 2nd Marussia, and 5.968 seconds of the far quicker Williams F1 car.
