Supreme Court of Canada

The Supreme Court of Canada (French: Cour suprême du Canada) is the highest court of Canada. The Court is the final court of appeals in the Canadian justice system. The Court grants permission to between 40 and 75 litigants each year to appeal decisions rendered by provincial, territorial and federal appellate courts. The Court's decisions are a final stare decisis (literally, "that which is decided"), and are binding upon all lower courts of Canada. The Court's decisions are to be recognized as the ultimate expression and application of Canadian law.

The Supreme Court of Canada is composed of nine judges: the Chief Justice of Canada and eight Puisne Justices.

Famous quotes containing the words supreme, court and/or canada:

And what do I care if she marries another? every other night I dream of her dresses and things on an endless clothesline of bliss, in a ceaseless wind of possession, and her husband shall never learn what I do to the silks and fleece of the dancing witch. This is love’s supreme accomplishment. I am happy—yes, happy! What more can I do to prove it, how to proclaim that I am happy? Oh, to shout it so that all of you believe me at last, you cruel, smug people.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)

The Twist was a guided missile, launched from the ghetto into the very heart of suburbia. The Twist succeeded, as politics, religion, and law could never do, in writing in the heart and soul what the Supreme Court could only write on the books.
    Eldridge Cleaver (b. 1935)

Canadians look down on the United States and consider it Hell. They are right to do so. Canada is to the United States what, in Dante’s scheme, Limbo is to Hell.
    Irving Layton (b. 1912)
