Stony Point Fashion Park - Rivalry With Short Pump and Regency Square

Rivalry With Short Pump and Regency Square

The mall was also a result of a fight between mall owner Taubman Centers and ForestCity, both who sought to build a new upscale center in Richmond. The battle was eventually settled in court, which ultimately saw Taubman building Stony Point, and ForestCity building the rival, two-story Short Pump Town Center, which is nearly two times the size of Stony Point. Short Pump broke ground in November 2000, but Stony Point didn't break ground until February 2002. Stony Point finally opened on September 18, 2003, the day Hurricane Isabel made landfall in nearby Outer Banks. Short Pump and Stony Point are both also notorious for the slow collapse of fellow Taubman-owned center Regency Square. While the mall is still open today, its proximity to Stony Point is quite close. If you travel north on Chippenham Parkway from Stony Point, eventually Regency Square will be there on your left. Stony Point's high-end store selection is also what seems to be resulting in the ultimate fall of Regency. In recent years, Regency has had to close its Ann Taylor, Williams-Sonoma, and GameStop stores due to the fact that they all have stores in both Stony Point AND Short Pump.
