On February 4, 2010, Dixon was convicted for embezzlement. The Maryland Constitution does not allow convicted felons to hold office, so Dixon was forced to resign as mayor hours after her conviction. Rawlings-Blake, as council president, automatically succeeded Dixon as mayor.
