  • atherosclerosis causes stenotic lesions in arteries.

  • diabetes
  • iatrogenic, e.g. secondary to radiation therapy
  • infection
  • inflammation
  • ischemia
  • neoplasm – in such cases, the stenosis is often said to be "malignant" or "benign", although this attribute actually refers to the neoplasm itself.
  • smoking
  • ureteral
  • urethral
