The State Bar of California is California's official bar association. It is responsible for managing the admission of lawyers to the practice of law, investigating complaints of professional misconduct, and prescribing appropriate discipline. It is directly responsible to the Supreme Court of California. All attorney admissions and disbarments are issued as recommendations of the State Bar, which are then routinely ratified by the Supreme Court.
The State Bar was legally established on July 29, 1927, when the State Bar Act went into effect. Today, the State Bar of California is the largest state bar association in the United States, with 242,000-plus members as of January 2013, of whom over 179,000 are on active status. It is headquartered in San Francisco, with branch offices in Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Famous quotes containing the words state, bar and/or california:
“The duties which a police officer owes to the state are of a most exacting nature. No one is compelled to choose the profession of a police officer, but having chosen it, everyone is obliged to live up to the standard of its requirements. To join in that high enterprise means the surrender of much individual freedom.”
—Calvin Coolidge (18721933)
“The bar ... is an exercise in solitude. Above all else, it must be quiet, dark, very comfortableand, contrary to modern mores, no music of any kind, no matter how faint. In sum, there should be no more than a dozen tables, and a clientele that doesnt like to talk.”
—Luis Buñuel (19001983)
“It shone on everyone, whether they had a contract or not. The most democratic thing Id ever seen, that California sunshine.”
—Angela Carter (19401992)
