STAR Vijay (commonly known as Vijay TV or simply Vijay) is an Indian entertainment channel broadcasting in Tamil. The channel is also available in several other nations as well. The channel is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation through STAR TV and Fox International Channels. In 1994, the channel was started as Golden Eagle Communication by N.P.V. Ramaswamy Udayar, which was later changed to Vijay TV after it was acquired by Vijay Mallya within a year. Before acquisition by Rupert Murdoch in 2001 it was owned by UTV Software Communications.
It is best known for serving its viewers with a mix of content, not limited to mega serials/daily soaps like other Tamil channels. The main reason for the success of STAR Vijay is its share of reality shows. Reality shows were first introduced to audiences by STAR Vijay. Some of its popular reality shows that brought in strong revenues include Airtel Super Singer, Neeya Naana, Adhu Idhu Edhu, Neengalum Vellalaam Oru Kodi and Nadanthathu Enna, etc. STAR Vijay went on to sponsor Yuvan Shankar Raja's first live in concert in Chennai, the first Tamil channel. Its anchors like Santhanam and Sivakarthikeyan have acted in Kollywood movies.
