St Mary's Sports College - History

History

Formerly St Mary's Grammar School - a voluntary aided R.C. school; it was mostly destroyed by bombs in 1941 having been established by the Sisters of Mercy near a convent on Anlaby Road. It was later rebuilt and moved to Inglemire Lane in 1960 to become St Mary's R.C. (Voluntary aided) High School for Girls and Marist R.C. College for Boys.

In 1988 after LEA reorganisation, it converted into St Mary's College - a Voluntary Aided, Roman Catholic, Co-Educational and Comprehensive Day school for pupils aged 11–19, in the Diocese of Middlesbrough.

The school was soon awarded the status of a specialist Sports College and accepted an invitation from the Department for Education and Employment to become a Beacon School. St Mary’s College has been a school, nationally recognised by the Youth Sports Trust physical education and sport.

In 2010 the College was judged by Ofsted to be outstanding, the first secondary school in East Yorkshire to receive the accolade under the revised Ofsted framework. It is also a Leading Edge school.

It takes a great deal of history to produce a little literature.
    Henry James (1843–1916)

No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now.
